| We never forget who we work for. Jaime and Francisco live on a farm in Imbabura province, Ecuador. |
People are ready
to start questioning the economic systems that got us into today's crisis - systems that left people vulnerable to economic
disaster. At the same time, the news industry is in peril. Newspapers, magazines, and reporters get thrown overboard for profit,
leaving fewer reporters and less column space to report all sides of the economic crisis story. So far, voices that are drawing
the links between global economic crisis and the policies of economic dependency and oppression, and the voices calling for
a better way forward, have not received the time and attention that they deserve. Yet there are many challenges to our movement in making news, presenting sound opposition
to global injustice, and presenting a better way forward for our civilization. One of our major challenges is that our issues
can be heady and complex, and many reporters and news outlets either don’t understand these issues or don’t think
their viewers, listeners, or readers will understand them. Another major challenge is that the images that we have displayed
to reporters in the past are not compelling to the average news consumer, and we have therefore appeared disorganized, violent,
or just plain crazy. We
need a better way to coordinate our media outreach efforts. We need to create clear content that makes our issues easy to
understand and digest, so that we can broaden our audiences and widen our base of support. We need to broadcast compelling,
human images that will make people aware of global injustice while informing and educating people about the specifics of these
injustices. And we need to do this right now. There are several major trade decisions that need to be opposed in the next few months, such as the
proposed free trade agreements to South Korea, Panama, and Colombia, and the decision by the G20 to give the IMF another $1.1
trillion. Because global injustice discourse has been shuttled off the news pages, leaders are returning to the bad trade
policies of the past. But people are ready to see right now that further attempts to globalize irresponsibly are wrong-headed
and have led us to global economic crisis. People in the US and other rich nations are ready to call for a better way forward.
There is a clear urgency to change the conversation and reintroduce sound opposition to bad trade policies being discussed
in Congress for South Korea, Panama, and Columbia. Global justice means that all people have rights and that all players follow the same basic rules of
the game. Problems of injustice occur on a global level so they need global solutions. The global justice movement works to
empower and protect the planet's populations from the groups and organizations that seek to undermine these rights. The global
justice movement facilitates the grassroots growth of efforts to build a better world, free of the kind of oppression that
undermines these rights. G-JUMP
seeks to promote this vision through outreach and communications. We seek to spread awareness of groups and organizations
in the struggle for their basic, fundamental rights by using the media to reach new audiences, empowering social change movements
with media and persuading power leaders to end oppression and support policies that protect people and the planet.
We seek to change the conversation
around global justice, to shift the frames of consciousness around global economics, and we seek to do it now.
Everyone on the planet has basic, fundamental rights: The right
to food, clothing, and shelter. The right to an intact ecosystem. The
right to an intact community. The right to autonomy and self-government. The
right to a living, local economy. G-JUMP
seeks to promote these rights by changing the conversation about the global economy. We seek to create a global consciousness
that people, planet, and principle before profit.
